AI Stands For Augmented Intelligence | Issue #16
The next evolution in human-machine collaboration.

It's been four whole days since our last issue.
Phew!
And the last issue wasn't really an issue. It was a break for that day.
Why did it get longer?
Power outage for three of those days. Then, a lot has happened that I couldn't even think of what to write on.
I just decided that this break had to end today.
Let's go back to me ticking up your email notifications every day at midnight.
In the garden of cutting-edge emerging technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is a luxuriantly tall tree.
Artificial intelligence is the "study and design of intelligent agents".
The idea is to make computers do the intelligent tasks that we do.
But what if I told you that the future (of innovation) doesn't rest in artificial intelligence?
When we were in the classification era, we used AI mainly to label things.
Me: Is that a cat or a dog?
Smart AI: It is a cat
Me: Great, but my little brother could do that when he was 3. Great anyway.
In the current generative AI period, the tech makes stuff that humans make.
Me: Generate a painting of a cat.
Smart-ass AI: Here's a painting of a cat. In the style of Van Gogh
Me: Wow. Even I can't do that
The next phase is the autonomous stage. AI will develop products and manage companies.
Very smart-ass AI: Cat Creations Ltd is a billion-dollar company thanks to me.
Me: **Gulp**
However, even as coders punch keys till their fingerpads hurt in order to push the frontiers, we might be disappointed to discover that artificial intelligence is not the crown of innovation.
Well, the answer is another AI.
Artificial Augmented intelligence.
Hmm, what is this one?
Augmented intelligence is a concept that emphasizes the collaboration of human intellect with AI.
The paradox of artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence has achieved remarkable milestones.
It can beat us at chess, translate languages, and even predict complex trends.
Well, the very nature of AI, driven by heartless data and algorithms, sometimes veers toward a cold approach.
In many instances, we see that it lacks the nuanced understanding, empathy, and creativity that humans bring to the table.
The power of augmented intelligence
Augmented intelligence, on the other hand, doesn't seek to replace human intelligence
It seeks to enhance it.
It's a kind of a symbiotic partnership between humans and machines, where the strengths of both are harnessed.
It's like taking the best of both worlds and fusing them together.
A collaboration, rather than a competition.
How can this partnership be carried out
1.
We can use AI to fuel our creativity. Like we are already doing.
Since AI can process vast amounts of data rapidly, it can provide us humans with insights and suggestions.
Imagine AI algorithms that generate design ideas or musical compositions as starting points for human artists to elaborate on.
2.
We can agree that although AI can analyze emotions through data, human empathy remains unparalleled.
In healthcare, for example, we can combining the diagnostic precision of AI with human empathy to improve patient care and for mental health support.
3.
Augmented intelligence can empower individuals and teams to solve complex problems collaboratively.
Humans frame the issues and AI assists in analyzing data and generating solutions.
AI can also improve human decision-making by providing data-driven insights.
Humans, on the other hand, can infuse those ethical and moral considerations which AI inherently overlooks but are essential in choices that affect society.
4.
Like we discussed in our previous issue on AI in education, AI can offer personalized learning journeys, that adapt to every learner's pace and preferences, while human tutors continue to provide mentorship and guidance.
5.
I ran out of points. Please skip.
The ethical imperative
AI without augmented intelligence can lead to concerns about bias and the loss of control.
Augmented intelligence is like a good car with a good driver.1
It places humans at the helm to ensure that our human values and ethics are not relegated to some footnote in a bot's research paper.
Human values should steer technology's course.
The future of collaboration
The path to a brighter future lies in embracing augmented intelligence.
It promises a world where humans leverage AI to amplify their creativity, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
Our future as humans does not lie in the replication of human thought
It's a world where AI serves as our digital co-pilots, empowering us to achieve new heights.
As we continue to innovate, I think we should shift the focus of the narrative from artificial intelligence to augmented intelligence.
Let's recognize that the true potential of our future as humans does not lie in the replication of human thought but rather, in the elevation of human capabilities.
Like all tools before have helped to develop our humanness, augmented intelligence will help us discover a brighter realm of human ingenuity.
An era where our shared human potential is the ultimate frontier to explore is upon us.
Prompt of the Day: Customer Feedback
Copy and paste this into ChatGPT:

Tool of the Day
If you have a blog, website or business, finding good stock images that resonate well may be a little challenging. You can try Stockimg's library of AI-generated stock photos.
Did You Know
The sibling founders of Anthropic, which Google just invested $2 billion in, were working at OpenAI before they founded their competitor AI startup.

This analogy is not a swipe at autonomous cars, btw, tbh.
