Millions of people use ChatGPT but over 90% are still stuck as beginners.
ChatGPT is a revolutionary tool that you can use to write social media posts, organize your business, or even craft a contract. However, if you want to get the best out of the tool, your prompts have to clearly define the kind of output you want. Poor ChatGPT prompts will always return shallow results.
I have used ChatGPT to do hundreds of tasks since it was first rolled out in November last year and I want to show you some of my secrets to writing killer prompts.
Step 1: Give ChatGPT a role.
Rather than blu rting out commands from your keyboard, putting ChatGPT in a role, will give it finer context so it can understand the kind of result you want and provide better output.
Some ways to do this are:
• Using phrases like “You are a (role)
• As a (role)
• Adding the name of a well-known practitioner of that role
Example: Role – Product Description Specialist
Let’s assume you run an e-commerce business selling clothing and clothing accessories and you need ChatGPT to assist with writing product descriptions.
Rather than saying, “Write a product description for my line of tote bags,” you can assign ChatGPT the role of a “Product Description Specialist.”
Your prompt might say something like:
You’re a product description expert. Provide detailed, compelling descriptions for our e-commerce store’s new line of tote bags, focusing on features and benefits
The power of this is that as you have defined ChatGPT’s role in that business context, you set the stage for more relevant and valuable results.
Step 2: Provide Examples
The second step is to offer clear and relevant examples. These examples act as a guiding light for ChatGPT, and help it to understand the nuances of your needs.
It’s as simple as it sounds. All you need to do is ask ChatGPT to do something and then provide an example of what you’d like to see below that.
To do this for product description for example, find a well-written product description elsewhere and use a prompt like this:
Write a product description for my tote bags using the example below:
<Example here>
Step 3: Refine and Iterate
The final step in writing killer ChatGPT prompts is embracing a culture of refinement and iteration. After receiving ChatGPT’s initial output, don’t hesitate to review and, if necessary, fine-tune your prompt. This makes it get better with new trials and contexts.
Ask ChatGPT to rewrite, to take another angle, or to solve the problem step-by-step.
Bonuses:
4. Specify the length or the word count of the response. For example,
You are a critically acclaimed novelist, write me a 300 word critique of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
5. Specify the tone. Use your adjectives gleefully. Do you want the response to be funny or excited? Tell ChatGPT, man
To sum it up,
Writing killer ChatGPT prompts is a skill that can make your interactions more productive and rewarding.
